Fisheries

Fish are a valuable resource, providing an important source of food and income on a global scale, especially for poor people. Fisheries in developing countries often suffer from the lack of well defined property rights (open access), causing problems with management, overfishing, compliance, and stock conservation. The EfD fisheries theme addresses these issues in a series of research projects:

eeu sweden | Fisheries Policy design Lessons learned from investing in marine and coastal management initiatives in the East Asian Seas The concept that underlies the interventions of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) International Waters Program is adaptive management at the Large Marine Ecosystem (LME) scale across the sequence of interventions from assessment and analysis to development of regional strategic action programs and national implementation of action plans to address transboundary environmental concerns. The GEF has provided grants to recipient countries in the East Asian Seas region covering five LMEs since the early 1990s and amounting to about US$200 million. This paper analyses GEF support to the Seas of the East Asian Region to draw lessons for future investments in LME management. Tengberg A, Cabanban AS. eeu sweden | Fisheries Policy design Eggert discusses sustainable fisheries in the EU Håkan Eggert, Associated Professor in Environmental Economics, University of Gothenburg, is one of the panelists in a European Parliament panel discussion on Sustainable fisheries in the EU – getting incentives right on April 25. Other panelists are other researchers, a Swedish Fishermen’s Federation representative and Members of the European Parliament such as Isabella Lövin, author of the renowned book Silent Seas (Tyst hav).

kenya | Agriculture Climate change Energy Fisheries Forestry Parks & Wildlife Policy design Kenya State of Environment Report 2010 EfD-Kenya actively participated in the preparation of the Kenya State of Environment (SoE) Report 2010. EfD-K Researchers Dr. Wilfred Nyangena and Geophrey Sikei were authors in the report. Dr. Nyangena was the Lead Author for Chapter 11 of the report which dealt with Policy options for action. Geophrey was a contributing author in Chapter 11 and Chapter 6 dealing with Land, Agriculture and Livestock.
