Climate change

Research related to different aspects of climate change is currently undertaken by the EfD centers in Central America, Ethiopia, and South Africa. The centers cover a wide range of important research topics on climate change ranging from applied work on adaptation to research on different aspects of tradable emissions permits schemes and mitigation of greenhouse gases.

Climate change Policy design Advancing the diagnostic analysis of environmental problems Social-ecological systems exhibit patterns across multiple levels along spatial, temporal, and functional scales. The outcomes that are produced in these systems result from complex, non-additive interactions between different types of social and biophysical components, some of which are common to many systems, and some of which are relatively unique to a particular system. These properties, along with the mostly non-experimental nature of the analysis, make it difficult to construct theories regarding the sustainability of social-ecological systems. This paper builds on previous work that has initiated a diagnostic approach to the analysis of these systems. eeu sweden | Climate change Policy design Taxes, permits and costly policy response to technological change In this paper, we analyze the effects of the choice of price (taxes) versus quantity (tradable permits) instruments on the policy response to technological change. We show that if policy responses incur transactional and political adjustment costs, environmental targets are less likely to be adjusted under tradable permits than under emission taxes. south africa | Climate change Policy design RFF/EfD Book Launch on January 11, 2012 at the University of Cape Town: Higher petrol taxes don’t hurt the poor The book, "Fuel Taxes and the Poor, The Distributional Effects of Gasoline Taxation and Their Implications for Climate Policy" will be launched at the University of Cape Town, School of Economics on January 11, 2012. EfD research fellow Professor Thomas Sterner, who is also the editor of the book, will be accompanied by EPRU research fellows for the book launch.

This course, Sustainable Development and the Economics of Climate Change, is a 10-day field course on environmental issues in developing countries, with an emphasis on issues surrounding global climate change. Thomas Sterner, professor in environmental economics at the University of Gothenburg, are among the lecturers.
