- 2013-01-11 Sustainable agriculture more likely with educated women The more years of education a woman has, the more likely it is that her household uses sustainable farming practices. By combining certain sustainable farming methods, many poor farmers would increase farm income without depleting their soils. This is the conclusion of new research from the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg.

- 2012-11-09 Sesync Funding Opportunities: Thematic Pursuits The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) is a new national research center supported by the National Science Foundation through a grant to the University of Maryland. SESYNC funds the world’s leading social scientists, natural scientists, and humanities scholars to travel to the Annapolis facility and work intensively in small trans-disciplinary groups to advance fundamental research on socio-environmental problems. Computational science is also supported by the center.
- 2012-11-07 Sterner works on the next IPCC Report on Climate Change Professor Thomas Sterner is one of the experts from 56 countries who are currently working in Vigo, Spain, on the next Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment report on climate change. The report will be released in 2014 to inform policymakers about response strategies in the area of climate change mitigation in a policy-relevant, but not policy-prescriptive way.
- 2012-10-31 Annual World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty, April 2013. The World Bank invites the submission of abstracts (between 800 and 1500 words) on the theme "Moving towards transparent land governance: Evidence-based next steps.” The deadline is November 15th, 2012. The conference will be held at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C., on April 8-11, 2013. This is a great opportunity for EfD researchers to reach out to policy makers, implementing organizations and donors.
- 2012-10-15 Climate negotiations relying on “dangerous” thresholds will not succeed The identified critical threshold for dangerous climate change saying that the increase in global temperature should be below 2 degrees Celsius seems not to have helped the climate negotiations so far. New research shows that negotiations based on such a threshold fail because its value is determined by Nature and is inherently uncertain. Climate negotiators should therefore focus on other collective strategies.

- 2012-04-16 Peter Parks in memoriam Peter J. Parks, a Professor at Rutgers University, and Research Associate at the Environmental Economics Unit at the University of Gothenburg, has passed away. Professor Parks has contributed in so many ways, both as researcher and teacher, to the academic environment in the field of natural resource economics in Sweden. In Gothenburg, Peter has been involved in teaching several generations of graduate students from all over the world in natural resource economics since 1998. He has also co-authored several articles. In Umeå, Peter was involved in a large research program with focus on natural resource management in northern Sweden between 1998 and 2003. We had the pleasure of getting to know Peter as a teacher, researcher and, most importantly, as a warm and dedicated friend.

- 2012-03-28 New center for environmental economics research “CEERAC” is born in Ghana The acute shortage of local capacity to undertake policy relevant research on natural resources management in sub-Sahara African countries, including Ghana, is seriously threatening the survival of renewable resources including rainforest stocks, capture fish stocks, aquifers, and agricultural soil. “Institutions such as Environment for Development initiative and the Center for Environmental Economics Policy in Africa have made very significant strides at addressing the problem but an enormous and increasing gap still persists. This is why I have established the Center for Environmental Economics Research & Consultancy in Ghana,” says Dr. Wisdom Akpalu, EfD Associate.
